Sumac

With its bright, tangy, lemony notes, our sumac is a versatile spice that adds a refreshing zest to salads, meats, and rice dishes, capturing the essence of Iranian cuisine.

Description

Sumac is made from the dried and ground berries of the Rhus coriaria plant, native to the Middle East and Mediterranean regions. The berries are harvested when fully ripe, then dried in the sun until they reach a deep reddish-purple color. Once dried, they are ground into a fine powder and sometimes mixed with a small amount of salt to preserve their flavor.

Sumac has been used in Persian and Middle Eastern cooking for centuries, prized for its tart, lemon-like taste. It is often used as a seasoning for grilled meats, particularly kebabs, and is sprinkled over rice, salads, and roasted vegetables to add brightness and depth. Sumac is also a key ingredient in the Persian dish Fattoush salad and is commonly mixed into yogurt-based dips for a tangy contrast.

Aside from its culinary uses, sumac has been valued in traditional medicine for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is believed to aid digestion and support overall health, making it a flavorful and functional addition to any kitchen.
